TRUMP EXPLODES: NOT F**KING LOSING TO BIDEN! President Donald Trump erupted at his top political advisers last week when they presented him with worrisome polling data that showed his support eroding in battleground states as his response to the coronavirus comes under criticism. Trump reacted with defiance, incredulous that he could be losing to someone he viewed as a weak candidate. “I am not f**king losing to Joe Biden,” he repeated in a series of heated conference calls with his top campaign officials. PRESIDENT WON'T EXTEND SOCIAL DISTANCING GUIDELINES

Trump said the federal government’s coronavirus social distancing guidelines will be “fading out” when they expire today, counting on states taking charge as they pivot to reopening. The administration says its cautionary guidance issued 45 days ago has been incorporated into recommendations given to the states on how they can begin gradually easing restrictions and reopening their economies. “They’ll be fading out because now the governors are doing it,” Trump told reporters, continuing to abdicate from leadership on the crisis. SUSAN RICE SLAMS KUSHNER'S 'RIDICULOUS' BOAST Former national security adviser Susan Rice tore into Jared Kushner for claiming the federal government’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak has been a “great success story.” Kushner made his comments after the U.S. topped 1 million cases of the virus and more than 59,000 deaths. He didn’t mention the U.S. death toll ― higher than any other country in the world ― the persistently inadequate testing, shortages of critical medical equipment and the lack of preparation that have plagued the administration’s crisis response. THIS ISN'T THE FIRST PRESIDENTIAL PUBLIC HEALTH FAILURE The year was 1976, the president was Gerald Ford and the fear was that swine flu would sweep the country in a repeat of the 1918 flu epidemic. But instead of resisting action like Trump, Ford tried to do too much. And much of the effort flopped. [HuffPost]

TRIBES WERE MEANT TO GET $8 BILLION IN COVID-19 AID. THEY GOT NOTHING. Tribal governments were supposed to get $8 billion in direct emergency relief from the CARES Act, the $2 trillion COVID-19 stimulus bill that became law on March 27. More than a month later, they haven’t gotten any of it. Part of the reason is that the Treasury Department has been flailing in its dealings with tribes. Another reason stems from a lawsuit over whether Alaska Native Corporations are entitled to the money. For now they are not, so there is no reason for the Treasury not to funnel it directly to tribal governments. [HuffPost]

CALIFORNIA GOV. ORDERS PARKS, BEACHES CLOSEDAFTER CROWDS Gov. Gavin Newsom will order all beaches and state parks closed Friday after tens of thousands of people flocked to the seashore last weekend during a heat wave despite his stay-at-home order. Eric Nuñez, president of the California Police Chiefs Association, said the governor's memo was sent to give chiefs time to plan ahead of Newsom’s expected announcement Thursday. A message to the governor’s office seeking comment wasn’t immediately returned. [AP]

POLICE CALLED AFTER NYC FUNERAL HOME PILES BODIES IN TRUCKS Police were called to a Brooklyn neighborhood after a funeral home overwhelmed by the coronavirus resorted to storing dozens of bodies on ice in rented trucks, and a passerby complained about the smell, officials said. Investigators who responded to a 911 call found that the home had rented four trucks to hold about 50 corpses, according to a law enforcement official. [HuffPost]

WHAT'S BREWING

U.S. DEATHS TOP 60,000, TRUMP'S PREDICTED MAXIMUM More than 60,000 people in the U.S. have now officially died from the coronavirus. The increasingly grim figure exceeds predictions Trump made just last week when he sought to frame a maximum of 50,000 to 60,000 total deaths as a win for America and a validation of his administration’s highly criticized pandemic response. “We did the right thing because if we didn’t do it, you would have had a million people, a million and a half people, maybe 2 million people dead,” Trump said. NORWEGIAN TYCOON ARRESTED ON SUSPICION OF MURDERING WIFE One of Norway’s wealthiest men was arrested in connection with his wife’s 2018 disappearance and held on suspicion of murder or complicity to murder in a case that police had earlier thought was a kidnapping. Tom Hagen, a media-shy real estate investor and owner of an electric company, was arrested on his way to work. The case had made headlines in the Scandinavian country, where police first reported that Anne-Elizabeth Falkevik Hagen had been abducted. [HuffPost]

TOP LINDSEY GRAHAM DONOR SWITCHES SIDES A top donor to Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is switching sides. Richard Wilkerson, former head of Michelin’s North America unit, based in Greenville, South Carolina, has endorsed Democrat Jaime Harrison. Wilkerson told the Charleston Post and Courier that he got to know Harrison when he worked as a lobbyist for the company on issues such as setting new tire standards for better fuel efficiency and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The newspaper said Wilkerson has contributed more than $10,000 to Graham since 2011. [HuffPost]

BIDEN STAYS SILENT Joe Biden, who championed women’s rights during his time in the Senate and the vice president’s office, has remained silent as a sexual assault allegation against him gains more traction. His campaign has put out a statement denying the accusation by Tara Reade, a former Senate aide, but Biden himself has not said anything. And in his absence, other Democrats ― particularly female activists and politicians ― have had to weigh in and decide whether to defend him. The New York Times, meanwhile, has refuted the Biden team's reported talking points. [HuffPost]

GOV. CUOMO SCHOOLS MITCH MCCONNELL WITH BASIC MATH

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo ripped into Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) for saying they don’t want to send any additional federal aid to his state. Both have described money to help New York in its battle with the coronavirus pandemic as “bailouts.” But Cuomo asked both senators, “Who is bailing out whom?” And he used some basic math to answer the question, noting that New York gives far more in federal tax dollars than it receives. [HuffPost]

GOP SENATOR CALLS ON OFFICIALS TO 'LEAD BY EXAMPLE' North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis called on elected officials to “lead by example” and follow coronavirus guidelines after Vice President Mike Pence faced backlash for refusing to wear a mask while visiting a hospital. “I’m trying to lead by example, do what I’m asking others to do. And I think that’s what every, every elected official must do,” Tillis said of guidelines meant to slow the spread of COVID-19. [HuffPost]
