CITING VIRUS, TRUMP SET TO SUSPEND ALL IMMIGRATION President Donald Trump said he would suspend all immigration into the United States for an undisclosed amount of time as the nation reels from the ongoing spread of COVID-19. “In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens,” Trump wrote on Twitter. “I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!” [HuffPost]

OIL PRICES PLUNGE BELOW ZERO Oil prices plunged below zero as demand for energy collapses amid the coronavirus pandemic and traders don’t want to get stuck owning crude with nowhere to store it. Demand for oil has collapsed, but producers continue pumping and the world's facilities for storing crude are nearly full. [AP]

FAUCI: ECONOMY CAN'T RECOVER BEFORE PEOPLE DO White House coronavirus adviser Dr. Anthony Fauci warned that protests against coronavirus safety measures could “backfire." “Clearly this is hurting from the standpoint of economics ... but unless we get the virus under control, the real recovery economically is not going to happen,” he told "Good Morning America." “If you jump the gun and go into a situation where you have a big spike, you’re going to set yourself back." KIM JONG UN IN POOR CONDITION AFTER SURGERY North Korean leader Kim Jong-un may be in poor health following surgery. South Korea’s Daily NK website reported Kim, a heavy smoker and severely obese, was receiving treatment after undergoing a cardiovascular procedure earlier this month, Reuters said. Citing a U.S. official with “direct knowledge” of Kim’s situation, CNN reported that Kim was in “grave danger." South Korea’s Yonhap News Agency said the government denied reports of Kim’s poor health. [HuffPost]

OVER 100 WOMAN LEFT TEXAS TO GET ABORTION UNDER BAN After Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) issued an executive order in late March that banned abortion amid the coronavirus pandemic, more than 100 women left the state to access the procedure elsewhere. That’s according to new data released by Planned Parenthood showing the real-world impact of the state ban, which officials have defended as necessary to preserve medical supplies for patients with COVID-19. [HuffPost]

TRUMP DISMISSES TESTING CONCERNS AS STATES PREPARE TO REOPEN Trump again insisted that the country was in “very good shape” with coronavirus testing, even as some governors say their states don’t have adequate supplies. Meanwhile, other governors have already announced the reopening of certain businesses as early as this week. When a “PBS NewsHour” reporter asked the president Monday about the “outcry” about a lack of access to testing, Trump shot back that “it’s not bipartisan, it’s mostly partisan. More important, it’s incorrect.” [HuffPost]

CORONAVIRUS TASK FORCE TO ADDRESS RACIAL DISPARITY Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D) signed an executive order creating an advisory task force meant to help address how the coronavirus pandemic has disproportionately infected and killed Black and brown Americans. The executive order cited data showing Black residents make up a staggering 40% of COVID-19 deaths in Michigan, though they represent 13.6% of the state’s population. [HuffPost]

WHAT'S BREWING

WHITE EVANGELICALS 'MOST LIKELY' TO SUPPORT RELIGIOUS EXEMPTIONS About one-third of white evangelical Protestants ― a religious group with strong ties to Trump and the Republican Party ― support the idea of granting religious exemptions to stay-at-home-orders, according to a Public Religion Research Institute report. About one-quarter of nonwhite Protestants said the same, along with 18% of both white Catholics and the religiously unaffiliated of all races, and 15% of white mainline Protestants. [HuffPost]

OCASIO-CORTEZ WILL VOTE AGAINST STIMULUS BILL WITHOUT CHANGES Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said she plans to vote against an emerging COVID-19 stimulus bill that Congress is negotiating with the White House. A draft of the bill reportedly includes new funding for hospitals, coronavirus testing and a small business loan program, but omits key progressive priorities. Ocasio-Cortez said her district’s suffering inspired her to insist upon more ambitious legislation. [HuffPost]

EX-RNC CHAIR FACT-CHECKS TRUMP ON COVID-19 PROTESTS

Trump continues to defend people protesting stay-at-home orders to stop the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. But former Republican National Committee Chair Michael Steele says those demonstrators aren’t just putting their own lives at risk, they’re also endangering the lives of vulnerable people around them. Trump claimed the demonstrators ― who are being goaded by right-wing media ― “love our country” and “want to get back to work.” [HuffPost]

U.S. MORE AT RISK THAN EVER OF MAJOR OIL SPILL On April 20, 2010 BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded while drilling an exploratory well off the coast of Louisiana. The catastrophic event killed 11 workers and unleashed more than 200 million gallons of crude into the Gulf of Mexico ― the largest oil spill in U.S. history. A decade later, experts and environmental advocates warn that the U.S. remains woefully unprepared for a major spill ― and is perhaps even more at risk of one due to the Trump administration’s relentless push to expand offshore drilling and gut environmental regulations. [HuffPost]

WHY SOME FARMERS ARE DITCHING LIVESTOCK AND GROWING PLANTS Experts have said we have to substantially reduce our meat production and consumption to avoid dangerous levels of climate change and improve population health. As people become increasingly aware of the environmental cost of raising livestock for food, plant-based diets are being embraced by the mainstream and alternative milks have gone from fringe request to flying off the shelves. Meanwhile, livestock farmers fear a war on their very ways of life. [HuffPost]

SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAMS RAPIDLY GOING BROKE In communities around the country, schools may be the only institutions making sure that hungry children and their families are fed. They’ve opened grab-and-go lunch stations and started delivering meals to neighborhoods by bus. But some programs are also going broke, losing millions of dollars. School administrators fear that they’ll have to make deep cuts next year if the federal government doesn’t provide relief. [HuffPost]
