WHAT'S BREWING
DEMOCRATS THINK REPUBLICANS OPPOSE STAY-AT-HOME ORDERS. MOST DON'T. In a new HuffPost/YouGov survey, 82% of Democrats and 69% of Republicans say it’s the right decision for state governments to tell residents to stay at home unless they have an essential reason for going out. The poll suggests Republicans may have largely tuned out Trump's inflammatory messaging. While Democrats believe Trump and his party are itching to open the country, most Republicans say they see support for continued coronavirus restrictions as the mainstream view of the GOP. [HuffPost]
MOST STATES EXEMPT HOUSES OF WORSHIP FROM STAY-AT-HOME Most states have built these religious exemptions into the guidelines they’ve issued on the coronavirus, according to a Pew Research Center analysis. About one-third of states haven’t imposed size restrictions on religious gatherings, fully exempting houses of worship from state regulations on social distancing. Some of these states ― places like Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee ― have deemed religious gatherings to be “essential,” lumping houses of worship together with health care facilities. Meanwhile, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio freaked out when he saw a rabbi's crowded funeral in Brooklyn Tuesday, and ordered police to disperse the crowd and issue summonses.[HuffPost]
ME TOO FOUNDER: BIDEN CAN BE ACCOUNTABLE AND ELECTABLE The founder of the Me Too movement explained what she believes is an “inconvenient truth” about the sexual assault allegations against Joe Biden. Tarana Burke, who founded Me Too in 2007, said former congressional aide Tara Reade’s accusations against Biden are being felt differently because of the 2020 election, which will feature two men in powerful positions who have been accused of sexual assault. DOCUMENTS THAT COULD SHED LIGHT ON BIDEN ALLEGATION REMAIN LOCKED UP Tara Reade, says she filed a written complaint about Biden with a Senate personnel office, but does not have a copy herself. If a copy exists, one place where it might be found is in Biden’s Senate files. But those documents are slated to remain locked up until long after the 2020 election. Biden donated his senatorial papers, which cover the period from 1973 to 2009, to the University of Delaware in 2011. [HuffPost]
HOW NEW ZEALAND STAMPED OUT CORONAVIRUS While much of the rest of the world continues to struggle under the weight of the coronavirus pandemic, New Zealand has stood out not only for how quickly it contained the virus but for the way its leader has led the country through the crisis. When faced with the difficult task of telling New Zealanders they were about to be placed into lockdown for at least four weeks, Jacinda Ardern came through with a simple message: Be kind. “We will get through this together but only if we stick together, so please be strong and be kind,” Ardern said. CAN ICELAND'S EXPERIENCE HELP SOLVE THE CORONAVIRUS MYSTERY? As of April 17, there had been 1,739 cases of coronavirus and eight deaths in Iceland – figures that are very low in contrast to (and due to) the high number of tests being carried out. It is calculated that around 10% of the population has been tested. The population factor is important, but there’s more to the story. Iceland is home to biopharmaceutical company deCODE Genetics. Leading the field of population genetics studies for over two decades, the company is now offering all Icelanders free and voluntary coronavirus screening, even for those who don’t have any symptoms.
