Click here Welcome to your weekly dose of black newsHello and happy Friday to everyone except Joe Biden and Mitch McConnell! In case you hadn't heard, these men said some really racist things this week. Let's start with Biden. During a fundraiser, the Democratic presidential candidate and former vice president fondly invoked a time of more “civility” in politics by naming two unapologetically racist past colleagues who opposed desegregation, the late Senators James Eastland and Herman Talmadge.Cory Booker called on Biden to apologize, but he refused and said that instead, Booker should apologize to him, responding, "He knows better." The NERVE! Apparently they talked one-on-one about it after but this whole ordeal was really just ugly.Speaking of ugly, McConnell told a group of reporters that he doesn't think this country needs reparations because we had a black president. I can't make this stuff up, y'all. These ignorant words really came out of this man's mouth.Thankfully, the next day, at a Congressional hearing on reparations, Ta-Nehisi Coates swiftly gathered this man. “Enslavement reigned for 250 years on this shore,” Coates said in his remarks. “For a century after the Civil War black people were subjected to a relentless campaign of terror — a terror that extended well into the lifetime of Majority Leader McConnell.”“The question really is, not whether we will be tied to the ‘somethings’ of our past, but whether we are courageous enough to be tied to the whole of them,” Coates concluded. And that is a word, folks.Protect this man at all costs and give us the reparations we deserve! This week's Best Things 🎉 Ava DuVernay Says In Harlem, Korey Wise Often Meets Supporters, And They Do See HimAva DuVernay said on Thursday that looking through photos on social media capturing Korey Wise meeting his supporters in New York City is one of her “favorite things to do.”A Woman Named Marijuana Pepsi Earns Ph.D With Dissertation On Black NamesShe earned her doctorate with a dissertation titled: “Black names in white classrooms: Teacher behaviors and student perceptions.” Go off, doc! 🙌🏾Dwyane Wade Says It’s ‘My Job As A Father’ To Support Son After Pride Parade BacklashDwyane Wade had a slam dunk response to criticism he received for supporting his youngest son at a Pride parade earlier this year.Janet Mock Becomes First Black Trans Woman To Land An Overall Deal With A Major StudioJanet Mock just landed a deal with Netflix that will allow her to introduce millions to stories about trans people.Notes from the mailbag 📫We want to hear from you! Each week we'll have a new question or topic.
