WHAT'S BREWING
U.S. MILITARY HASN'T FACED THREAT LIKE THIS FOR A CENTURY U.S. troops and their families stationed across the country are growing anxious and angry over what they say is their commanders’ lackadaisical response to the coronavirus pandemic. Commanders are still requiring their subordinates to stand in close proximity, and to do training that involves activities like “body drags” and “fireman carries,” which require grabbing and touching other perspiring Marines. ILLINOIS TAKING CHARGE OF COVID-19 TESTING Frustrated Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker announced his state is taking charge of coronavirus tests in the wake of the Trump administration’s “profound failing” to deliver promised supplies. As of Sunday evening, the state had 4,600 cases of COVID-19 and 65 deaths, including what’s believed to be the world’s first loss of an infant to the pandemic. [HuffPost]
TINY EAST COAST ISLAND BEGS OUTSIDERS TO STAY AWAY About 10 miles off the coast of mainland Rhode Island lies the tiny porkchop-shaped jewel of Block Island. The island’s only township, New Shoreham, relies almost entirely on summer tourism to fuel its economy. But this year, as the novel coronavirus spreads across the United States, many of the town’s roughly 1,000 year-rounders are pleading with outsiders to stay away until the dust settles. [HuffPost]
TRUMP: MEGHAN AND HARRY MUST PAY FOR U.S. SECURITY Before anyone asks, Trump said he won't foot the security bill for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle should they move permanently to the U.S. Trump made that much clear in a tweet he fired off Sunday that acknowledged unconfirmed reports that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have moved from Canada to Los Angeles, as Markle’s post-Royal film work takes off. PEOPLE THROWING PANDEMIC PARTIES, PROMPTING ARRESTS Amid nationwide efforts to slow the spread of the coronavirus, police have been busy breaking up parties and even arresting some people who refuse to comply with social distancing rules, including one man who police say defiantly threw two parties in a week. “Can’t believe I have to say this at all, let alone for the second time. But here we are,” an exasperated New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy tweeted. [HuffPost]
THE END OF ICE FISHING For most of 72-year-old ice fisherman Tim Sacka’s life, the ice season began in late December and lasted well into March. These days, he says, the water on Lake St. Claire, Michigan, is far less predictable. “Back 30 years ago… the ice lasted in the canals until April 1,” he said. “And it seems like it’s getting later and later for the ice to form.” Last year, he says, the ice formed early but lasted only a few weeks.
