TED CRUZ HAS VIRUS CONTACT -- GOP REP, TOO Some Republican lawmakers said they will quarantine themselves after discovering they interacted with an individual at last month’s Conservative Political Action Conference who later tested positive for the coronavirus. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) announced his decision to self-quarantine, and Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) followed, adding that three of his staff members will also quarantine themselves. [HuffPost]


WHITE HOUSE NIXED CDC VIRUS PLAN The White House overruled Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials who wanted to recommend that elderly and physically fragile Americans be advised not to fly on commercial airlines because of the new coronavirus. This comes amid mounting concerns over hospitals' capacity to cope with an influx of patients, and the news that a cruise ship hit by the coronavirus is to dock in Oakland, California. [AP]


WORLD STOCK, OIL MARKETS ARE TUMBLING Global stocks are falling and bond yields are sinking worldwide. Markets had been in dire straits due to fears surrounding the spread of the novel coronavirus, but Saudi Arabia's decision Sunday to slash oil prices and start a price war with Russia appears to have caused a massive global stock selloff. London markets plunged as much as 8% and the U.S. was poised to follow. [CNN]


NORTH KOREA FIRES PROJECTILES IN NEW WEAPONS TEST The South Korean military said North Korea fired three unidentified projectiles, some flying about 125 miles before falling into the East Sea. It appeared to be some sort of military exercise similar to one from March 2, which was denounced by some European nations as a “provocative” act that could undermine efforts to negotiate with the country’s leader, Kim Jong Un. KAMALA HARRIS ENDORSES BIDEN FOR PRESIDENT Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) has endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination. “There is no one better prepared than Joe to steer our nation through these turbulent times, and restore truth, honor, and decency to the Oval Office,” she said in a statement. The Rev. Jesse Jackson, meanwhile, backed Bernie Sanders. [HuffPost]


1 DEAD, MULTIPLE WOUNDED IN MOTORCYCLE CLUB SHOOTOUT A shooting involving motorcycle clubs in Cleveland has left one person dead and more than a dozen others injured, police said. Club members were attending a party on the Ohio city’s East Side when multiple people began firing guns just before midnight. The event was attended by “two rival groups,” police said. 10 DEAD, AT LEAST 23 MISSING, IN HOTEL COLLAPSE At least 10 people were killed in the collapse of Chinese hotel that was being used to isolate people who had arrived from other parts of China hit hard by the coronavirus outbreak. The sudden collapse of the building in the southeastern city of Quanzhou reportedly trapped 71 people, of which 38 have been rescued and 23 are still missing. [AP]


PRO-TRUMP CLIMATE DENIAL GROUP FIRES STAFF The Illinois-based Heartland Institute ― an influential climate-denial think tank bankrolled by President Donald Trump’s far-right billionaire donors, has laid off nearly a dozen staffers amid financial troubles, according to three former employees. Heartland captured headlines last month for promoting a German teenager with ties to neo-Nazis as the climate denier’s alternative to acclaimed youth activist Greta Thunberg. [HuffPost]


TWITTER FLAGS DOCTORED BIDEN VIDEO TWEETED BY TRUMP Twitter has branded a political video mocking Joe Biden shared by Trump as “manipulated media.” It was originally posted by White House social media director Dan Scavino. The clip included a speech that was edited to make it appear that the Democratic candidate had inadvertently endorsed the president. Trump retweeted the video on Saturday and added: “I agree with you, Joe!” [HuffPost]


TRUMP 'CAN'T BLUFF HIS WAY THROUGH CRISIS' Trump is revealing how “deeply unsuited he is to deal with a genuine crisis that he can’t bluff his way through,” according to an editorial published Sunday in the Washington Examiner, a conservative political news site and weekly magazine that often has the president’s back. The Examiner has a serious problem with the president’s deceitful approach to the coronavirus threat. [HuffPost]


THE FIGHT TO SAVE COAL COUNTRY FROM MITCH MCCONNELL In January, Charles Booker ― a 35-year-old Democratic state legislator from Louisville and one of the youngest Black state lawmakers ever elected in Kentucky ― entered the Democratic primary against Amy McGrath, a retired Marine fighter pilot. The winner will face Mitch McConnell. Despite widespread loathing, McConnell is still the prohibitive favorite in a state where no Democrat has come within 100,000 votes of beating him since 1990. SAUDI ANNOUNCES NEW CRACKDOWN ON OPPOSITION Saudi security officials arrested members of the country's royal family in what appeared to be the latest crackdown to benefit Crown Prince Muhammed bin Salman. Royal guards princes Muhammed bin Nayef and Ahmed bin Abdulaziz, both once seen as contenders for the throne, from their homes. They reportedly stand accused of treason and risk execution or life imprisonment. [HuffPost]


STUDENTS PROTEST UNIVERSITY'S ANTI-LGBTQ STANCE  Last week, administrators at Brigham Young University clarified that “same-sex romantic behavior” was still not allowed on campus. Several hundred people protested outside church headquarters in Salt Lake City to cap off a week of fury and heartbreak for LGBTQ students and their straight allies.
