TRUMP SILENT ON BAILOUT FOR HIS COMPANY President Donald Trump refused to say if he would bar his own company from receiving stimulus money included in any potential bailout package Congress passes to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.“I’ve learned, let’s just see what happens,” the president told reporters at the White House when asked about the Trump Organization, which owns properties already ailing because of the president's unpopularity. “Because we have to save some of these great companies.” [HuffPost]
DEMOCRATS BLOCK SENATE CORONAVIRUS BILL Democrats raised serious concerns about the Senate’s massive emergency legislation aimed at propping up the economy and giving relief to workers hit hard by the growing coronavirus pandemic, saying it’s tilted too far in favor of Wall Street and big corporations. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) attempted to advance the bill on Sunday evening, emphasizing the need to move quickly, but it stalled and world financial markets immediately nosedived. FAUCI: U.S. 'NOT NECESSARILY' ON SAME PATH AS ITALY Dr. Anthony Fauci, director for the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the United States is “not necessarily” on track to face the same catastrophic conditions as Italy, saying a travel restriction instituted in January may have helped curb the spread of the coronavirus. U.S. intelligence agencies reportedly issued classified warnings to members of Congress and Trump administration about the potential global impact of the virus. [HuffPost]
EXPERT AXED DROM CDC POST IN CHINA BEFORE OUTBREAK Several months before the coronavirus pandemic began, the Trump administration eliminated a key American public health position in Beijing intended to help detect disease outbreaks in China. The medical epidemiologist reportedly left her post in July. As cases of the coronavirus exploded in February, the Trump administration chastised China for censoring information and keeping U.S. experts from entering the country to help. [Reuters]
RAND PAUL CONTRACTS CORONAVIRUS Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) has tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus. He is the first senator known to have contracted the virus. Paul is “feeling fine” and is in quarantine, according to a tweet sent from his account. “He is asymptomatic and was tested out of an abundance of caution due to his extensive travel and events,” the tweet continued. HARVEY WEINSTEIN POSITIVE FOR CORONAVIRUS Convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein has tested positive for coronavirus, the head of New York state’s corrections officers union said. Weinstein’s rep told HuffPost that it had not been informed of any positive test result. [HuffPost] |

But some smaller manufacturers that supply parts for GM vehicles are about to shift production in order to help companies already making ventilators produce even more of them. OHIO TRIES TO USE COVID-19 TO STOP ABORTIONS In an effort to ensure health care workers on the front lines of the coronavirus outbreak have proper access to personal protective equipment, authorities at both the state and federal level are asking doctors and patients to forego “nonessential” operations. IF WE BAIL OUT AIRLINES, WE MUST IMPOSE CLIMATE RULES As the COVID-19 pandemic rocks the industry, airlines are asking Congress for a $50 billion bailout, while Boeing requested a “minimum” of $60 billion to keep the aerospace manufacturing sector afloat. Experts say such aid packages are a golden opportunity to reform an industry whose surging emissions of planet-heating gases threaten to inflame the world’s other deadly crisis: climate change. MEDIC DESCRIBES LUNG FAILURE IN YOUNG PATIENTS Since last week, this New Orleans respiratory therapist been running ventilators for the sickest COVID-19 patients. Many are relatively young, in their 40s and 50s, and have minimal, if any, preexisting conditions. He is overwhelmed by the manifestation of the infection, both its speed and intensity.
