Trump also baselessly suggested noise from wind turbines causes cancer. [HuffPost]CALIFORNIA AG: DECRIMINALIZE IMMIGRATION Unauthorized immigration should be decriminalized, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra (D) said, becoming one of the first prominent Democrats to challenge the foundation of the Trump administration’s crackdown. “They haven’t committed a crime against someone, and they are not acting violently or in a way that’s harmful to people,” Becerra argued. [HuffPost]LORI LIGHTFOOT WINS CHICAGO MAYORAL ELECTION Lori Lightfoot won Chicago’s election for mayor and will become the first black woman to lead the country’s third-largest city. Lightfoot, a former federal prosecutor, is also Chicago’s first openly gay mayor and had been head of a police oversight board. [HuffPost]REPUBLICANS FAIL TO CHANGE RULES OVER JUDGES Senate Republicans failed to change the rules to make it easier to confirm most of Trump’s nominees. Senators voted 51-48 on a resolution to reduce the amount of time they spend debating most nominees from 30 hours to two hours. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) now plans to use the so-called nuclear option to make the rule change with a simple majority, or 51 votes. [HuffPost]BERNIE CAMPAIGN HITS $18 MILLION Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) has raised more than $18.2 million since launching his 2020 presidential campaign. Sanders, who handily won re-election to the Senate in November, also benefits from transferring outstanding funds from previous campaign accounts to his presidential run. Counting those funds, Sanders has raised $32 million and has $28 million in cash on hand that he can spend. [HuffPost]ALABAMA LAWMAKERS ATTEMPT ABORTION BAN An Alabama state representative was expected to introduce a bill that would ban abortion within two weeks of conception, except in cases where the mother’s life is at risk. The legislation is designed to spark a court challenge to Roe v. Wade. Republican state Rep. Terri Collins said the bill would provide “a vehicle to revisit the constitutionally-flawed” court decision. [HuffPost]TWO MORE WOMEN ACCUSE BIDEN Two more women have come forward with stories of former Vice President Joe Biden touching them in ways that made them uncomfortable, adding to two previous allegations against the potential 2020 presidential candidate in the last week. [HuffPost]GAY SEX PUNISHABLE BY STONING IN BRUNEI Defying the United Nations, rights groups and horrified critics, Brunei says it’s pushing ahead with a slew of new Islamic laws that will make gay sex and adultery punishable by stoning to death, and amputation a penalty for theft. The laws are part of a new Sharia penal code that was fully implemented on Wednesday. [HuffPost]2019 MEASLES CASES ALREADY SURPASS 2018 TOTAL The number of measles cases continues to skyrocket, with more confirmed infections in the first three months of this year than in all of 2018. As of Thursday, there had been 387 cases of measles this year in 15 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, citing preliminary findings.
