No Images? Click here I spent many hours in my room as a kid playing with Lincoln Logs and dolls and all sorts of things — making up stories as I went. Yes, it was solitary, but I loved it, and I like to think my parents just let me be because they knew I was enjoying myself, but more importantly, I was relying on my own imagination and curiosity to spend the day.Fast forward 30-some-odd years, and I try to encourage my kids to free play — if my son wants to walk around the house carrying all his toys cause he’s “going on a trip” (and makes a mess as they fall all over the house), then so be it. The core question we’ll try to answer: How I can help my kids navigate it all and grow up to be the kinds of people I’d be proud to be friends with: honest, respectful, empathetic, resilient, intelligent, curious, self-sufficient, creative? In short: not assholes. We’d love to see you there!More stories from the trenches: HuffPost is now a part of Oath and a part of Verizon.
