No Images? Click here Megyn Kelly Is IndefensibleNBC officially cancelled Megyn Kelly's morning show on Friday, just three days after the TV host defended dressing up in blackface for Halloween. "When I was a kid, that was OK," Kelly told an all-white panel. The network was quick to condemn Kelly for the remarks because of how they were incredibly, obscenely racist. (She shed tears apologizing the next day.) There's a long and shameful history in the United States of white people putting on blackface to dehumanize, disparage and demean black people in the name of "entertainment." "Blackface is never a neutral form of entertainment, but an incredibly loaded site for the production of damaging stereotypes," wrote David Leonard in HuffPost in an essay on the topic in 2012. "The same stereotypes that undergird individual and state violence, American racism, and a centuries worth of injustice." Kelly had developed a reputation as a "moderate" for calling out Donald Trump's sexism during the presidential election. But that was never quite a comfortable fit: She has her own long and shameful history of making racist comments, dating back to her time at Fox News. But that didn't stop NBC from hiring her last year -- and giving her a $69 million contract. Anyways, her ratings weren't great and she made the men at NBC angry, reportedly, when she spoke publicly about the network's culture of sexual harassment. "She was going very hard on the #MeToo stuff and they didn’t like that, and they couldn’t stop her," a former NBC staffer told the Daily Beast. "And now this is payback.” Normally, I'd be here defending any woman facing harsh retaliation for speaking up about sexual misconduct. Women who report harassment are routinely fired, forced out or penalized. But not this time. Kelly's comments are indefensible. Whatever, the real reason for ditching her show, NBC seems to have made the right call. You can follow me on Twitter @EmilyRPeck ... HuffPost is now a part of Oath and a part of Verizon.
