Click here Dear Reader,We were unable to send our daily news brief on Monday because of a technical glitch — our sincere apologies. But here's what we have for you today:Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP government may say 'a new Kashmir' is on the horizon, but yet another damning report from the valley shows that children are being illegally detained in the state. HuffPost India has been able to identify at least four such cases, including a 15-year-old high school student who was illegally detained for 23 days without charge. All eyes were on Greta Thunberg and Modi, who spoke at the UN climate change summit last night. While the 16-year-old climate activist made an impassioned speech, fighting back tears, Modi claimed the world needed to act "right now". But this rhetoric cannot mask the fact that Modi government’s track record on protecting the environment in India has been very sketchy. And as Trump and Modi make a great show of their bonhomie, Huffpost India's Akshita Jain explains why the US president isn't Modi's true friend. For a week, from August 27 to September 3 this year, 17-year-old Waseem Ahmad Thakur left his home each morning for the nearest police station in Soura, where he would sit for 12 hours before he was allowed to return home.Thakur is one of several Kashmiri children who have been placed in limbo by the state police force, possibly in breach of the law. Some of these children, their parents said, were physically abused by policemen during their illegal detention. The child detainees and their family members said more children had been arrested. Family members refused to be photographed, and most spoke off record as they feared police reprisals.Narendra Modi’s remarks come in the backdrop of massive climate strike protests across the world since Friday, including in India. Swedish teen activist Greta Thunberg, who has inspired and led the global climate strikes, also delivered a passionate speech at the summit, where she called out world leaders. In February, Thunberg called out Modi in particular and she wasn’t wrong to say what she did.New to this email?
