No Images? Click here I gotta say. I usually take the advice celebrities give out about motherhood with a humongous grain of salt. After all, they often have so much help and so many more resources than the rest of us, what do they really know? So I was pleasantly surprised to read this snippet from Kristen Bell this week. When she was asked by a reporter how she gets her kids to open up to her and her husband, the actor Dax Shephard, she said:“Everything I ask my children to do in life, I explain to them why.” She said that she asks about her family member’s days as such: “Do you know why we ask you about your day? I ask you about your day, and I ask Daddy about his day because we’ve been separated for a few hours and I wonder how you’re feeling ... if you experienced something today you want to talk about. Also because I’m interested, and it gives us a chance to reconnect to each other. That’s why people ask one another about their day. It also makes the other person that’s being asked feel very good and valued. It’s a nice way to show you love someone.”I have two reactions to this. One, there’s usually so much chaos around me that, I realized, I don’t stop to explain my actions or requests to my kids in a thoughtful way. And I should change that. And secondly, I tried this framing the very next day with my kids. It didn’t go as swimmingly as I’d hoped (i.e. he didn’t immediately turn around and ask me how my day was) but the seeds were planted. And that’s enough for me.So, thank you, Kristen Bell, for giving me something to think about.Just lovely August is Breastfeeding Awareness Month, so what better way to honor the life force that is a breastfeeding mom than by highlighting these awesome women feeding their kids around the world?Genius!
For when your kid is keeping you awake American society is, by and large, unfriendly toward breastfeeding, especially in public places like restaurants and airports.
