No Images? Click here Welcome to your weekly dose of black newsHey fam! We lost one of the most important voices in the world this week when Toni Morrison died on Monday night. This loss feels deeply personal. Morrison is the reason I found the courage to dedicate my life to telling stories about Black people absent of the white gaze. She is the reason I found greater understanding in my Blackness and in my womanhood. It cannot be overstated how much we owe this legend. As the world mourns and tributes pour in, it's important to note her steadfast dedication to fighting racism, the voices (including Angela Davis') she championed in her career as an editor and the way her words felt smooth like butter while simultaneously being sharp as the knife that cuts it. Fortunately for us, her words are immortal. Rest in power, Toni Morrison. It is also important to note that today is the 5-year anniversary since Mike Brown was shot and killed by Ferguson cop Darren Wilson. His family has yet to receive justice as Wilson hasn't been held accountable. And the Department of Justice has "backed away from its mandate to rein in systemic police abuse and deserted even those police departments that asked the feds for help," HuffPost reporter Ryan J. Reilly writes. On top of that, the activists who were on the ground at the time are still dealing with mental and physical issues leftover from the acute stress and trauma from protesting in Ferguson. HuffPost reporter Jolie A. Doggett spoke to Antonia French and Johnetta Elzie for a must-read piece on what activism does to the body. Check it out.
