SAYS NO TO GUN-TOTING TEACHERS New York has banned schools from arming teachers and other non-security staff under a new law signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D). The measure exempts school resource officers, police and other law enforcement staff. [HuffPost]OSAMA BIN LADEN’S SON CONFIRMED DEAD Hamza bin Laden, the son of Osama bin Laden and heir to al Qaeda leadership, is dead, according to The New York Times. He was apparently killed in the past two years, but it took time to confirm his death. The United States reportedly had a role in the killing, though details are still unknown. [HuffPost]. FEDERAL RESERVE CUTS INTEREST RATES The Federal Reserve cut interest rates for the first time since 2008, citing concerns about the global economy and muted U.S. inflation. The cut lowered the U.S. central bank’s benchmark overnight lending rate to a target range of 2.00% to 2.25%. [Reuters]ANOTHER GOP REP QUITS Rep. Mike Conaway (R-Texas) announced that he will not seek reelection in 2020, becoming the fifth congressional Republican in just two weeks to announce an imminent retirement. [The Daily Beast]KANSAS ACCUSES HEMP FARMERS OF TRAFFICKING WEED In early January 2017, Kansas Highway Patrol seized what they believed to be marijuana from the back of a FedEx truck. Paperwork verified it was actually hemp. Nothing happened for two years. In the meantime, industrial hemp was legalized. Finally, this year, Kansas prosecutors charged two hemp farmers with felonies.
