Workers at the union’s Washington headquarters held a vote March 12 to determine whether they would be willing to go on strike. After months of negotiations, SEIU and its staff union still hadn’t reached a new collective bargaining agreement. Copies of management’s talking points left around the building said the SEIU “will be well prepared to conduct the business of our members without interruption in the event of a strike.” [HuffPost] [Tweet | Share on Facebook]
TRUMP RAGES AT FIRST RALLY SINCE MUELLER President Donald Trump, emboldened by the completion of special counsel Robert Mueller’s report, unleashed against everything in his path during a rally Thursday in Grand Rapids, Michigan. “The collusion delusion is over,” Trump declared. “Many, many people were badly hurt by this scam, but, more importantly, our country was hurt.” He said his opponents are on “artificial respirators” right now. “They’re getting mouth-to-mouth resuscitation,” the president enthused. “Little pencil-neck Adam Schiff. He’s got the smallest, thinnest neck I’ve ever seen.” [HuffPost] PELOSI TELLS “SCAREDY” GOP: SHOW US THE REPORT House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has called Attorney General William Barr’s four-page synopsis of the Mueller report, which said Mueller found no evidence of the Trump campaign conspiring with the Russian government, “condescending” and “arrogant.” Mueller’s report is more than 300 pages long, it was revealed Thursday, sparking fresh criticism from Democrats that Barr’s summary was gravely inadequate and the full findings must be quickly released. [HuffPost] BETSY DEVOS’ PROPOSED EDUCATION CUTS GO DEEP News of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos’ proposed cuts to Special Olympics funding went viral this week, but advocates say that focus has obscured the much deeper cuts DeVos is trying to make to other areas. These would eliminate 29 education programs, including after-school programs for low-income kids, a program that provides professional development for teachers and one that helps provide mental health services. All are essential to kids with disabilities. [HuffPost] SCHIFF RESPONDS TO RESIGNATION CALLS Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) fired back at demands from GOP lawmakers that he give up his chairmanship of a key House committee over the results of the special counsel’s Russia investigation. Reiterating all the evidence connecting Trump’s campaign with Russia, he said Thursday: “You might say that’s all okay. But I don’t think it’s okay. I think it’s immoral, I think it’s unethical, I think it’s unpatriotic, and yes, I think it’s corrupt.” [HuffPost] PUERTO RICO GOV. WARNS TRUMP: I’LL PUNCH THE BULLY IN THE MOUTH Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló has pushed back on the White House, telling CNN in an interview that he will not sit back, be bullied by the administration and let the people of Puerto Rico be treated like “second-class citizens.” He said he wants to explain that the president has been receiving bad intel about Puerto Rico's post-hurricane recovery efforts, but he added: “If the bully gets close, I’ll punch the bully in the mouth.” [HuffPost] JUDGE ORDERS JUSTICE DEPARTMENT TO TURN OVER COMEY’S TRUMP MEMOS A federal judge has ordered the Justice Department and the FBI to turn over both full and redacted versions of memos about Trump written by former FBI Director James Comey. Judge James Boasberg of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia will decide whether to release them to the public as part of a 2017 Freedom of Information Act case brought by CNN, other media outlets and conservative organization Judicial Watch. [HuffPost]DEMS EXPAND VOTER SUPPRESSION PROBE The House Committee on Oversight and Reform announced Thursday it was widening its probe of voter suppression allegations in the 2018 midterm elections, and asked officials in Texas and Kansas to provide extensive communications related to recent controversial election changes. A review of Texas’ data showed substantial errors, including a list of 100,000 suspected noncitizens of whom at least 25,000 were in fact citizens. [HuffPost]LAWMAKERS PROPOSE COLLEGE ADMISSION REFORM Democratic lawmakers in California proposed new legislation on Thursday aimed at curbing unfair advantages for students of wealthy families in the college-admission process. [HuffPost]PUERTO RICO BANS LGBT CONVERSION THERAPY Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rosselló signed an executive order on Wednesday banning the medically denounced practice of “gay conversion” therapy for minors across the island. “Today we take a step forward to raise awareness among the people about this type of practice that causes pain and suffering,” Rosselló said, adding that the ban would help “protect children.” [HuffPost]SOUTH KOREA COULD DECRIMINALIZE ABORTION South Korea’s president nominated two progressive judges to the country’s top court this month, raising the possibility that a longstanding abortion ban could be repealed. The Constitutional Court is slated to rule next month on a challenge to the ban, which makes abortion punishable by up to two years in prison for doctors who illegally perform the procedure. An obstetrician initiated the challenge after he was charged in 2017 with performing 69 illegal abortions. [HuffPost]
