Click here Welcome to your weekly dose of black newsBefore I dive into the mess that was this week, I'd be remiss to not acknowledge the sick and violent terrorist attack in New Zealand in which a white supremacist killed 49 Muslim worshipers. Islamophobia is alive and real and unless we call it by its name and actively fight against it, white supremacists will continue to feel emboldened to wreak havoc in our spaces. Now shifting gears to the everyday white folks who use bigotry to take opportunities from black and brown people. Aunt Becky and a "Desperate Housewife" were among dozens of other entitled rich folks fell hard this week in the "Varsity Blues" college scam. And their indictments shined and even brighter light and what we already knew: wealthy white folks swing their privilege around to take up space from individuals who actually did the work to deserve admission to prestigious universities. These folks just got caught. Also this week, Jussie Smollett has pleaded not guilty to 16 counts of disorderly conduct related to his involvement in an alleged hate crime hoax. In the meantime, "Empire" showrunner Brett Mahoney said the entire situation has been "emotional" for the cast and crew and "it’s too early to think about the show without him.” Finally, a South Florida police officer has been relieved of duty after a video surfaced showing Dyma Loving, a 26-year-old black woman, being placed in a headlock and thrown to the ground after she called police about being assaulted with a firearm. Loving told HuffPost that following the Miami incident, she won’t be able to “see police officers the same.” “None of them,” she added. “Because I literally called [them] for help with my life and that’s how [they] treated me. ... [They] beat me up.” *deep sigh* Take care of yourself this weekend, y'all. I know I will be.
