Click here CENSORSHIP AND FREEDOMWhile the Indian censor board, which was expected to have a more progressive attitude after Prasoon Joshi took over from former head Pahlaj Nihalani, continues to subvert its own rules and stall films, streaming giants seem to be making the most of this opportunity. In a week that saw the Board deny certification for a film titled #MeToo, Prime Video dropped its most ambitious series yet, the Zoya Akhtar-Reema Kagti co-created, Made In Heaven. The show, which has strong political undertones, features everything that would make the Censors cry - cuss words, nudity, and strong political commentary. However, none of it is done to titillate (looking at you, ALT Balaji), but fits in the context of the 9-part drama.Take that, censor board! After decades of suffering regressive soap-operas on Indian television, Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti have finally given us a show that inverts every trope, every overused stereotype we’ve seen on Indian TV.Foregrounding current events such as #MeToo and Section 377, Akhtar and Kagti's show is a sharply-written commentary on the economy of excess. It also features standout performances by Sobhita Dhulipala and Arjun Mathur. It's well-known that Karan Johar invites only those he 'personally' deems worthy to be on his chat show, Koffee With Karan. So while (actors?) such as Ananya Pandey and Tara Sutaria made it to this season (plot twist, they haven't acted in any released film yet but appear in a Johar production in a few months), Pannu, who has films such as Pink and Manmarziyaan, hasn't been invited.Naturally, the feisty actress, who doesn't come from a famous background, didn't feel too good about it.In one single tweet, she demolished Johar's elitism.Other highlights from the week...New to this email?
