It was the first to democratically elect a woman president in 1980. And its laws are miles ahead of ours: Iceland has strong paid parental leave (for men and women). The tiny nation just recently passed a revolutionary equal pay law that requires businesses to prove they pay men and women fairly. In the U.S., by contrast, if you learn you're being under-paid and your company does not do anything about it, your next step would be litigation. And that's a long, hard road. Some women can't even take discrimination claims to court because employers force them to agree to arbitrate disagreements. And we still don't have any paid parental leave at all. Though there is a lot of momentum behind passing some kind of policy. I wrote about some new (terrible) Republican ideas in this arena yesterday.Given all this, it's no surprise that U.S. is 51st on the Economic Forum's ranking, between Mexico and Peru.More disconcerting? Iceland may be the closest to equality, but it's not there yet.Happy women's history month!Actually, now that I've said that. Not sure how I feel about "women's history month." Women represent half the world's population. To give us a single month out of 12 feels pretty insulting.
