Barr “is a great gentleman,” Trump told host Sean Hannity in an interview on Fox News. “Had he been there initially, this all would not have happened.” [HuffPost] [Tweet | Share on Facebook]EXPOSED: NRA STAFFER PUSHED PARKLAND HOAX An official with the National Rifle Association corresponded with a prominent Sandy Hook conspiracy theorist to call into question the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, emails obtained by HuffPost show. NRA officer Mark Richardson emailed Wolfgang Halbig, a noted harasser of parents of Sandy Hook Elementary School victims, to float a conspiracy theory about the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where 17 people were killed last year. [HuffPost]NRA COMES OUT AGAINST VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN ACT The National Rifle Association is opposing the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act over provisions designed to keep domestic abusers from having access to firearms. Under federal law, individuals convicted of domestic violence offenses against their spouses or family members are already barred from owning firearms. But the law does not apply to individuals who abuse their dating partners. The VAWA reauthorization bill would fix that, closing the so-called “boyfriend loophole.” The NRA has called the bill “a poison pill.” [HuffPost]TWO KILLED IN SEATTLE AFTER GUNMAN OPENS FIRE ON BUS A man opened fire on motorists in a Seattle neighborhood in what authorities are calling a “random” attack that left two dead and two injured Wednesday afternoon. “We believe it’s a random, senseless act,” Deputy Police Chief Marc Garth Green told reporters. “We’re outraged at what this suspect did.” [AP]GOP LAWMAKER MANSPLAINS EQUAL PAY Rep. Bradley Byrne (R-Ala.) suggested that his female colleague, Rep. Susan Wild (D-Pa.), did not understand a piece of legislation on the gender pay gap that she co-sponsored, or his proposed amendment to it. “As a practicing attorney for over 30 years, I can tell you this was not the first time someone has attempted to avoid an argument over the merits of the law using condescension and dismissal,” Wild said. [HuffPost]AT LEAST 18 DEAD AFTER TRUCK PLOWS INTO GUATEMALA CROWD A truck slammed into a crowd gathered on a dark highway in western Guatemala Wednesday night, killing at least 18 people and leaving bodies scattered on the roadway. Local fire department spokesman Cecilio Chacaj said people had apparently gathered on the highway to inspect a person who had been killed in a separate accident when the semi-trailer plowed into them. [AP]TRUMP: OTHER COUNTRIES AIM MACHINE GUNS AT MIGRANTS President Trump on Wednesday night said that aiming machine guns at undocumented immigrants was a “very effective” deterrent, but not one that he would like the U.S. to use. “They are pouring in. We’re capturing these people, we’re getting ’em,” Trump said in a live telephone interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity. “But we don’t do like other countries,” Trump claimed. “Other countries stand there with machine guns ready to fire.” [HuffPost]BRITISH PM THERESA MAY WILL RESIGN AFTER BREXIT Theresa May has told Tory MPs that she will quit as prime minister once the U.K. has formally quit the European Union, in a dramatic last-ditch attempt to secure support for her deal. Speaking to backbenchers in a packed room in the House of Commons on Wednesday afternoon, May said she would step down as PM sooner than previously thought, but did not give a firm date for her departure. [HuffPost]THE “REPLACE” PLAN THAT WASN’T On the heels of the Justice Department’s announcement Monday that it is fully backing a lawsuit that would eradicate the entire Affordable Care Act, a decision Trump reportedly directed himself, the president has begun making big promises that he and the Republican Party are on the verge of revealing a tremendous new plan that will make American health care great for everybody. There’s no reason anyone should believe that. [HuffPost]THE HUMAN TOLL OF KAMALA’S CRUSADE “Progressive prosecutor” Kamala Harris, who is running for president, wanted to transform how California responded to students missing school. Parents like Cheree Peoples wound up paying the price when they were arrested for their kids’ spotty attendance record under a truancy law that Harris personally championed as state attorney general. [HuffPost]NZ SHOOTER HAD FINANCIAL LINK TO FAR RIGHT Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz on Wednesday said there was a financial link between the man who killed 50 people in mass shootings at mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, and the far-right Identitarian Movement in Austria. Martin Sellner, head of the Identitarian Movement — which says it wants to preserve Europe’s identity — received 1,500 euros ($1,690) in early 2018 from a donor with the same name as the man charged with murder following the Christchurch attack. [Reuters]MIKE POMPEO STILL REFUSES TO BLAME KIM JONG UN FOR OTTO WARMBIER’S DEATH Secretary of State Mike Pompeo repeatedly refused to blame American student Otto Warmbier’s death on North Korean leader Kim Jong Un during an appearance before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday. North Korea imprisoned Warmbier for stealing a propaganda poster during a trip in 2016 and sentenced him to 15 years of hard labor. Pyongyang released him to the United States a year later in critical condition, and he died in June 2017. [HuffPost]
